Design and Designers have largely positioned themselves as creative problem-solvers and their short-term goals have been about making lives easier and more comfortable. However, we are facing repercussions of this view of design. Our landfills are overflowing with products with short lifecycles and there is a looming environmental crisis. If we position materials as an important priority in the design process, will this make us more conscious of our choices? Learning from craft practices and design movements like the Arts and Crafts movement, we can use material with more sensitivity and allow the material to lead us in design.
