Initially unfamiliar with Mithila art, I explored various Indian indigenous storytelling traditions, but Mithila’s bold outlines, symbolic motifs, and narrative flow resonated deeply. Navigating this unfamiliar tradition brought discomfort that gradually transformed into curiosity and connection.
Recognizing how Mithila art thrives on structure, I embraced its grid framework—not as limitation, but as rhythm guiding creativity. This order shaped my practice and helped form my voice.
The turning point was imagining Malairaya—a mythical figure symbolizing renewal, inspired by folklore and nature. Through storyboarding, I translated his journey from drought to rain into a scroll of sequential panels, using a vivid yet restrained palette and harmonious patterns.
Painting the scroll became an act of constructing a cultural chronicle that blends heritage with personal storytelling. Final refinements revealed an organic rhythm and emotional clarity, transforming initial discomfort into an authentic narrative voice.
